Update from Jason

  1. Staff Updates – Ms. Heinrich will connue until March Break, a new teacher will be hired to finish year. Grade ½ - Ms. Bolton hired. Grade 7/8 Ms. Kakaletris. Mr. Rawlins not returning. Prep coverage -Ms. Piccione. Ms. Kazemi – LTO grade 5/6 (in for Mr. Lea who resigned).
  2. Projections for next year – 33 JKs registered so far (higher than same me last year). Seven students moving to French Immersion. 46 Grade 8s graduating. Projections are 410 students for next year. Might need another portable. We continue to hold for Barbara Reid. No change in foreseeable future.
  3. Equity – Black History Month – Very intentional about black history month. All teachers celebrate in some way. Focus on black excellence, Canadian representation, acknowledge everyday people (not just the stars). They don’t teach enslavement or trauma, not exclusively American. Black history month video series – possible fundraisers. We will probably put aside $500 for equity initiatives (for displays, performances, etc.).
  4. Student lates and absences – Lots of students sick right now. Students late every day is becoming difficult to manage. Missing announcements (what’s open/on that day, what rehearsals, etc.), instructions, lessons. It’s disruptive to the class. Office is unable to complete safe arrival. Unnecessary calls home. Dangers in parking lot. Getting crowded. Maybe start open entry (so they can come in 5-10 minutes earlier), one teacher on each floor and someone at the door. Will increase instructional time, hopefully reduce lates. Many schools in the district do open entry. Thinking about it. Mr. Innes will send a note before implementing – maybe after March Break.

Ms Calvert and Mr. Alfonso  - Plastic, industrial risers.

  • Currently borrowing from Glad Park. Would like to buy 4-6. Four for $5,000.  Start fundraising. Can get some money back for returning the ones we have. This could be a longer term fundraising goal.
